Less Than Three Hours a Day—Is It Really Enough?

The difference between a great job match and a poor one will determine the intensity of job coaching needed after hire as well as job seekers' satisfaction and retention.

So, what essential support activities are needed to secure the best job matches? Research recommends the following three essentials:

· Getting to know the job seekers well.

· Finding tasks/jobs that align with their strengths.

· Any other support that facilitates job entry—e.g. benefits and transportation planning.

How much time do employment programs dedicate to these activities?

We didn’t know, until now: Employment consultants who use ES-Coach reported an average of 2 hours and 31 minutes per day, dedicated to these activities combined (Figure 1).

Is less than three hours per day about right, too much, or too little? What would it take for employment consultants to dedicate more of their day to these essentials?

Figure 1: Estimated daily hours and minutes per day dedicated to essential supports in January 2025 (N=80 employment consultants)

I hope this was useful. Please email me your insights, or share anonymously, if you prefer.

Have a great rest of the week!
